Hiring a dedicated team in Lagos: what to expect

Time zones, onboarding and the rituals that make distributed teams work.

Jupita Consulting2 min read

Lagos sits in the same time zone as much of Europe and overlaps the US East Coast morning, which makes it one of the easiest places to run a distributed engineering team from. The talent is deep; the practices you put around it determine the results.

Why Lagos

Nigeria has one of the largest and fastest-growing technology workforces in Africa, with engineers experienced in fintech, payments and high-scale consumer products. Many have worked with international teams and are used to English-language documentation, modern tooling and agile delivery. The overlap with London working hours is almost complete, and there are three to four shared hours with New York.

What a dedicated team looks like

A dedicated team works only on your product, attends your ceremonies and uses your tools. It is usually led by a senior engineer or delivery lead who is accountable for output, supported by engineers, QA and, where needed, design. You set priorities; the team owns delivery. This is different from project outsourcing, where a vendor works to a fixed scope and hands over at the end.

The first month

  1. Week one: access, environments, codebase walkthrough and a small first ticket shipped to production.
  2. Week two: shared ceremonies, a working agreement on hours and response times, and a review of the architecture.
  3. Weeks three and four: ownership of a real feature, end to end, with a demo to stakeholders.

Shipping something in the first week matters more than it seems. It proves the pipeline works, surfaces access problems early and sets the expectation that the team delivers, not just attends meetings.

What makes it work

  1. A single accountable lead on each side, with a weekly check-in.
  2. Written decisions in a shared space, so context doesn’t depend on who was in the call.
  3. Demos every sprint, so progress is visible to people outside engineering.
  4. The same definition of done, code review standards and on-call expectations as your in-house team.

Distance stops mattering when progress is visible. Teams that struggle are usually missing one of these, not suffering from geography.

Treat the team as part of yours, not a supplier on the other end of a ticket queue.

Practicalities

Power and connectivity in Lagos are better than their reputation, but they still need planning. Good partners provide backup power and multiple internet connections at the office, and stipends for engineers working from home. Ask about this directly. Contracts should cover IP assignment, data protection under the Nigeria Data Protection Act and, if you are regulated, audit rights.

Scaling up

Add people in pairs so nobody is working alone in a new area. Keep the lead constant through growth. Let the existing team help shape hiring and onboarding; they know what new joiners need to succeed. Most teams can grow from three to ten engineers within six months without losing pace, if the foundations from the first month are in place.
